Tabletting (compressing) is process of formation tablets by pressure of powdered or granulated material. Tabletting in modern pharmaceutical manufacturing is done using special presses, which are called tablet machines. Tablets produced by two methods. Basic tablet production method - is compressing granules or tableting powders on tableting machines with different performance. The resulting in this way tablets are called pressed. Another way - tableting mass forming.
When forming wet plastic mass is compressed. It humidified by 60% ethanol and then dried. The resulting in this way tablets are called formed or microtablets. In fact, they are a mixture of small doses of milled drug substance with sucrose, lactose or mannitol (trituration) and have the form of small cylinders with diameter of 1-6 mm and weight up to 0.05 g. In comparison to pressed, such tablets are less stable and hard. 1-2% of all tableted preparations is specific gravity of microtablets.
Such tablets are manufactured when need to obtain microtablets which production on modern tableting machines exercise difficult or when during compression may occur changes in physicochemical properties of drug substance. This section will be devoted to more detailed description production technology of tablets by compression method (tabletting).
